Christmas Twin Babies dressed up for Santa
For a very long time I did not want to photograph babies. Yes, I am one of those people who doesn’t have the natural motherly instinct. However when my friend had her beautiful twin boys and asked me to collaborate on her little post card project which I named “Christmas Twin Babies dressed up for Santa”, I immediately agreed.
I arrived one hour before the babies’ usual feeding time to go over my friend’s exciting ideas and figure out where to do the photoshoot. We wanted to get couple photos of the boys awake and most of them asleep. Many photographers will tell you that doing a photoshoot right after the baby’s feeding time is the best time. They are comfortable and ready to nap. After they fall asleep, they are pretty much allowed to be moved and posed however we want to.
First thing first, we turned up the heat. Warm and comfortable babies are happy babies. Happy babies equal to great photos. Next, we figured out the little outfits we wanted to put them in. These boys were 3 months old. They really didn’t need much decorations and no clothing at this stage really fit on them nicely. Delicate fabrics and pastel colors really enhanced the softness of the newborns. Some small toys were also a great addition.
Last was the location. If you were a young mother with a newborn you’d know how impossible it is to keep the house neat, not mentioning having two! There were things everywhere on every surface you could find. But being a wedding photographer, I was used to think quick on my feet. We quickly cleared out an empty space in the middle of the living room, pulled the cushions off the couch, laid some soft blanket on top of it and started shooting.
The boys were easy to please. They looked curiously at my “big black circular boxy thing” and waved their little arms and legs. One of them kept looking at their mom, so my friend jumped in with their favorite toy trying to help making them smile. However that lead both of the boys looking sideways instead of at my camera, so instead we had my friend stand on the other side where they could not see her.
Almost two hours later, we stopped to feed them. We couldn’t however get both of them to fall asleep, so we ended up with one “drunk santa”. Part of baby photography is we can plan as much as we want to, but it’s really up to the baby.
After about three hours, the boys were beat and so were we. We got a lot of great photos with them in action and couple for my friend’s Christmas post card project. I didn’t get as many as I usually would working with adults but that is normal. With babies we were working with the chance of catching one good shot in ten tries, and I wouldn’t trade that one good shot for anything else!
Merry Christmas little Angels and thank you for these beautiful photos!
